The Evolution Of Photography

June 19, 2011.

Photography is a means of creating still images with the use of a camera.  Photography started in 1820 with the development of chemical photography by a French inventor named Joseph Nicéphore Niépce.

During the early years, a photo is shown in black and white colors known as monochromes. Monochromes show only grayscales or black and white colors.  Color photography became popular by the mid 19th century and throughout the years the development of the camera was improved in which the colored photos were integrated. The Polaroid camera or the instant film camera was introduced during the 1970’s and it’s the first of its kind to instantly develop a colored photo right after taking a picture.

The 70’s saw the introduction of SLR cameras or Single Lens Reflex Cameras. The Olympus OM1 SLR camera, introduced in 1972, was one of the earlier SLR cameras which have a mechanical system and a big viewfinder.  By 1985 the Minolta 7000 SLR camera was invented and has an autofocus system feature built inside the camera’s body. By 1991 Kodak unveiled the DCS 100, the first Digital SLR camera, thus commercial digital photography was born.

Through digital photography, a photographer is able to transfer images to his computer with ease with the use of a memory card. The photographer is able to edit the picture such as adjust the lighting, shadows, the hue and saturation, brightness as well the contrast. There are instances that the photo can be manipulated through editing so that it would look different when it is printed or developed. Even the most amateur of photographer can shoot a certain landscape with ease and the result of the photo is outstanding. This is due to the features a DSLR camera has. You just point, shoot, edit and print, all done in 30minutes or less.  Photos are easily uploaded in the internet nowadays. All you need is an account from photosharing and social networking websites such as photobucket.com or Facebook.com, by providing an email address like the ones from yahoomail.com or gmail.com, to register.

Due to the number of growing photographers in the world who use digital cameras, professionals would still choose the standard camera film over the digital ones in which most would say nothing beats old school and having a traditional photographic look.
