It is usually fairly easy to care for and clean travertine floor tiles, especially if they have been sealed. Without sealing, you will find that the tiles stain easily and are quite a bit more difficult to clean.
If sealed, however, you do not need to employ the use of any harsh cleaning liquids.
Although some people prefer the natural look of unsealed travertine tiles, most people prefer to seal them as they are much easier to care for and maintain. Sealing can be done once the tiles are in place and in general it is best to re-seal them every year, especially if they get a lot of use.
How To Seal Travertine Tiles
There are several products on the market that make sealing the tiles very easy. One product, StoneTech BulletProof Stone Sealer, is very easy to use. You simply place the sealer on the cleaned tiles. Once on, it will still allow the stone to breath but it will prevent spills from soaking into the tiles.
You can use clear wax as well. It should be applied to the cleaned tiles, using a soft cloth. Afterwards, rub the tiles with a clean cloth in the direction that the veins in the stone run.
Tips For Cleaning Travertine Tiles
One step in caring for the tiles is to make sure they are not subject to spills, with coffee, wine and juice being particularly harmful. Wipe up any spills right away, and always use a coaster under cups and glasses. In the bathroom, put your toiletries in a tray on the counter top rather than letting them sit directly on top of the counter.
It is important to clean travertine tiles and surfaces with a non-abrasive and non-acidic cleanser. After cleaning, wipe down with clean water and then dry afterwards.
Be careful not to scratch your tile floor. Mats at the entrance doors will encourage people to scrape dirt or sand from their shoes before entering. It is also important to sweep your floors often.
