It’s becoming an observable trend that more people in their 20s and 30s are choosing to live in major cities, much more than their parents ever wanted to. Apparently they have no trouble with using public transportation, so long as they have their choice of restaurants in a walking distance from their home.
This means that they are living in smaller apartments instead of large suburban homes, meaning that they have space challenges that their parents never did.
How can someone keep all their things stored away while living in a reduced living space? Well, it takes a little more creativity than a large house may ask for, but it’s certainly possible. Furniture makers have always tried to fit some extra storage space into the pieces they’ve made. Think of the dining room hutch, an elegant addition that many of our parents had. It was a perfect spot to put extra silverware, tablecloths, and really anything else they needed to hide. It’s furniture like this that you’ll need for your place.
Another option is to purposely buy furniture with a bit of space underneath it. Think of a couch with a few inches of space underneath it – perfect for thin storage units that you can slide underneath. The same is true of a chair or entertainment unit as well. Of course it will help if you use the kind of furniture that has drapery or something that hides what’s underneath, but even if it doesn’t have those, so long as it’s relatively close to the ground it will work very well.
The day of using a bunch of moving storage boxes to keep all your things in may very well be over. Even for people living in small apartments, through a little creativity, you should be able to fit everything in your home that you’re hoping to fit.
